Grandchildren of Nuggets recommends: #3 The Beets

No not the band from Nickelodeon's Doug - The 'Other' Beets have been a favourite of mine for about a year now. Their début album 'Spit In The Face Of People Who Don't Want To Be Cool' is still not really talked about as much as I'd like it to be. Bare to the bones stoner lo-fi has never sounded so good! And, before you ask, no they don't do a cover of 'Killer Tofu' although if they did it wouldn't sound out of place at all.

May's Mix-Tape 2010

May's Mix-Tape 2010

Perhaps the greatest band 1960s L.A. band not to 'make it big'. I recently purchased The Dovers singles compilation that was re-issued on Misty Lane Records in Italy. This rarer-than-rare cut of bubblegum folk pop magic is a must for any 60s garage nut.

Children of Nuggets: The Chills - Satin Doll

You may be familiar with their most famous song 'Pink Frost' (you may not!) - but I took time to patiently trawl through The Chills back catalogue. I fished out 'Satin Doll' which is one of the finest songs I've ever heard. Taken from their first album Kaleidoscope World in 1986.

Grandchildren of Nuggets: Boy Or Bison - Spiderman

Boy Or Bison are a new group from Manchester and play dreamy surf that also flirts with a garage band sensibility, doo-wop, early beat (think of the Hollies played at a slower tempo) and the twang of Link Wray.

Grandchildren of Nuggets recommends: #1 Spectrals

Spectrals are the mastermind of Louis Jones - a talented singer/ song writer/ producer - from somewhere in West Yorkshire ( I think they call it Leeds!). Musically, the clues in the name. Judging from what I've read on the net he doesn't particularly like what is wrote by 'bloggers', web forums, and such. I respect this but I don't think he would begrudge me the chance to congratulate him on a fine 7 inch split single on Tough Love Records (alongside thee Mighty 'Fair Ohs'. Tracks include 'Birthday Kiss' and 'Keep Your Magic Out Of My House'.
