Five good things from 2010: what Grandchildren of Nuggets says is cool

Grandchildren of Nuggets - as an idea, as a DJ/general outlook on music, as a philosophy - has been going less than 12 months; but, in that time I've witnessed some truly remarkable things that need elaborating upon. Here are just five that spring immediately to mind.

1. Unquiet Desperation: In 2010, Sheffield's finest monthly event has continued to give the best underground acts, DJs (myself included), writers, artists and photographers a well needed kick up the ladder to bigger and better things. D/R/U/G/S, Gold Panda, Age of Consent, all tore Sheffield a new arsehole in 2010 and opened my eyes to experimental dance music. Acts I wouldn't necessarily even know about or listen to. All for free - for fuck sake. It's been a pleasure to contribute to the night over the past year as a resident DJ, and share the decks with the likes of Sunday Girl, Secret Diaries and Hat & Cakes. I personally wish it every success in 2011.

2. Spectrals: I'm bored to death, quite literally, of singing this bands praises. So it was great to see Spectrals play to a packed audience at Queens Road Social Club alongside Dum Dum Girls in October. I first saw these guys about a year at the Plug supporting Crocodiles when about ten people showed up for what was to be one of the most enjoyable gigs I have ever been to. Be-My-Baby era Spector, dreamy flirtations with garage, doo-wop, and surf. In short, it's the nostalgic sound of kissing your first girl. I recommended these earlier on last year on the blog and if you've not caught on yet I think you should.

3. Misty Lane Records: In July I visited Rome and got the chance to meet Massimo the guy behind Misty Lane Records - who has been reissuing vinyl's and back catalogues of obscure garage, surf and beat bands since 1989. He was one of the nicest guys I've ever met and took time out to meet me for a drink in Trastevere - which was easily my favourite quarter of the whole city. This is the man that was bold enough to re-release the Dovers singles collection which has been sampled by the like of Atlas Sound on 'Walkabout' and Skeleton Jones for 'The Great Escape'. His secret record premises in Rome are the stuff of legend.

4. The Jesus Love Heroin Band: I saw this band last week on a trusted friends recommendation. It's good to see other people from Sheffield who share a love of garage, psychedelia and odd-ball sixties records. I only play them on vinyl and obsess over records I can't afford whereas these guys are out there doing it, and have read somewhere that they have more recordings in the offing. I can't wait!

5. Sheffield's Charity Shops: apart from Record Collector on Broomhill, "chazza" shops are the only place where you can pick up old vinyls. It's a sad state of affairs for me, as I've only been seriously collecting for about the past 18 months; but in that time I've grabbed original cuts of plastic by Francoise Hardy, The Honeycombs, The Chantells, and The Yardbirds for insanely cheap prices over the counter. It's a testament to the older generation, their taste in popular culture, their love and care for records that these artefacts still arrive in my hands in such good condition. Particularly, when a lot of the CD's I held dear as a teen are now in bits and are scratched to fuck.

Anyway - have a good Christmas and New Year - see you in 2011 - eager in anticipation of more things cool as I see them.

August Mix Tape

Nuggets: Lost Souls - Peace Of Mind

Yet more Aussie garage brilliance from Lost Souls. This song is not to be confused with The Count Five's 'Peace Of Mind' - it was released in on the Sunshine label in 1966.

Children of Nuggets: The A'dam Sycles - Feel The Pain (Roby's Song)

Massimo Del Pozzo - Italian purveyor of all things 1960s cool and founder of Misty Lane records - kindly gave me a copy of his band's recent album 'Out Of The Circle Game' released on his own label Teen Sound Records. Feel The Pain is my favourite track of the lot - feel the shades of The Zombies and Abbey Road Era Fab Four.

Grandchildren of Nuggets: Skeleton Jones - The Great Escape

Following on from Atlas Sound's sample of Grandchildren of Nuggets favourites The Dover's 'What Am I Going To Do' Skeleton Jones provoke yet more interest in The Dovers by sampling 'I Could Be So Happy'. A good friend of mine unearthed this gem a few months ago.

July Mix Tape

Australian garage blues might to be your cup of tea but it certainly is mine. This cover of 'You Stole My Love' - a song made famous by The Mockingbirds - is one that shouldn't be forgotten too quickly.

I was amazed to find that The Fleshtones are still going strong today. I saw them while on holiday in Rome and was amazed by the band's energy and popularity. I was shocked that they didn't play 'The World Has Changed' so here it is for you to enjoy. Possibly the best party band in the world today.

Grandchildren of Nuggets: Atlas Sound - Valley Of The Saroos

Atlas Sound are prime candidates for a mention on Grandchildren of Nuggets merely for re-working 'Valley Of The Saroos' an early Joe Meek's composition taken from the concept album 'I Hear A New World'.

June Mix Tape

Nuggets: Exchequers - Is There Some Girl

I found this record on the Cicadelic Sixties Garage Compilation. It could be described as tender discordant fragments of beat, psych, folk and pop. I nothing about the band and don't really care except to say this is one song I wish I had written.

Think The Nightcrawler's 'Little Black Egg' with Sky Saxon's vocal delivery. A classic 60s inspired garage band. I would love to hear some more recordings from The Optic Nerve if anyone has any.

Grandchildren of Nuggets: The Strange Boys - Nothing

The Strange Boys have been around for a couple of years now and are just starting to get the recognition they deserve. Nothing is slowed down garage blues at it's finest.

Grandchildren of Nuggets will be playing rarer-than-rare cuts from the ever-increasing vault @

June 11th - Unquiet Desperation @ 3B Art Space - (w) Ghost Hunter, Antique Doll, Jack Dinner, Grandchildren of Nuggets (plus live artists)

June 18th - Drop the Bomb - Launch Party @ Redhouse - (w) Sir Wix-a-lot, Felix Goldfinger, Chad Vasquez

June 28th - Unquiet Desperation @ Bungalows & Bears - (w) The Victorian Englishmen's Gentlemen Club, Hats and Cakes (plus again loads of live art)

You dig!!!

Grandchildren of Nuggets recommends: #3 The Beets

No not the band from Nickelodeon's Doug - The 'Other' Beets have been a favourite of mine for about a year now. Their début album 'Spit In The Face Of People Who Don't Want To Be Cool' is still not really talked about as much as I'd like it to be. Bare to the bones stoner lo-fi has never sounded so good! And, before you ask, no they don't do a cover of 'Killer Tofu' although if they did it wouldn't sound out of place at all.

May's Mix-Tape 2010

May's Mix-Tape 2010

Perhaps the greatest band 1960s L.A. band not to 'make it big'. I recently purchased The Dovers singles compilation that was re-issued on Misty Lane Records in Italy. This rarer-than-rare cut of bubblegum folk pop magic is a must for any 60s garage nut.

Children of Nuggets: The Chills - Satin Doll

You may be familiar with their most famous song 'Pink Frost' (you may not!) - but I took time to patiently trawl through The Chills back catalogue. I fished out 'Satin Doll' which is one of the finest songs I've ever heard. Taken from their first album Kaleidoscope World in 1986.

Grandchildren of Nuggets: Boy Or Bison - Spiderman

Boy Or Bison are a new group from Manchester and play dreamy surf that also flirts with a garage band sensibility, doo-wop, early beat (think of the Hollies played at a slower tempo) and the twang of Link Wray.
